I am going to ask you to stay with me on this one, now I know this is going to feel a little like a science lesson in some parts, but I promise I will do my best to explain this in a way that everyone can understand, and for those who want to dig a little deeper because they enjoy the science, I will add links to articles where you can dig a little deeper.
So what am I talking about, this is a simple practice available to everyone and the best part about it is you can do it Free, yes that’s right completely free. All you need to do is place your bare feet on the ground, let me explain and you can decide.
The practice is often referred to as Earthing or Grounding, personally I call it earthing, because as a holistic practitioner grounding for me is a different practice.
What is Earthing?
Earthing is the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface, such as walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil. It is important in wellness because in doing so it allows the body to absorb natural negative electrons, which helps neutralize harmful free-radicals, reducing inflammation, and restoring physiological balance in your body.
What is an electron you ask? Well, they drive virtually all of the bodies processes, including your nervous system communication.
What is a free-radical you ask? Free radicals are highly unstable, reactive molecules produced naturally by your body or from external sources. While they get a bad reputation for causing aging and disease, free radicals also play essential roles in keeping you alive when kept in balance. At controlled levels they support the respiration process (breathing), your immune system and more.
How do free-radicals get unbalanced? Free radicals get unbalanced when their production exceeds your body’s natural ability to neutralize the excess production of them.
Factors that contribute to causing imbalance of free radicals?
- External & Lifestyle Factors
- Environmental toxins
- Cigarette smoke & alcohol
- Poor dietary choices
- Internal & Biological Factors
- Chronic stress
- Inflammation
- Lack of sleep
What does an imbalance of free radicals do to your body? When free radicals outnumber your body’s antioxidant defences, this is a state known as oxidative stress, when in this state they can cause inflammation in your body, damage your cells, tissues, and even your DNA.
Nurture is amazing and it has a plan
The good news is that your body is amazing and nature gave us a free was to keep these excess free-radicals in check. If you want to access natures free benefits all you need to do is simply connect your bare feet to the earth, stand or lay in your garden, take a walk in a park (Pretty Woman style) or along a beach.
Is there another way?
What if you don’t have the time to walk barefoot safely, for example it’s winter and you work too late to see the ground and ensure it is safe. Or what if you simply do not like the feeling. Don’t worry, there is another way to access the benefits of earthing. With the assistance of modern technology we now have access to earthing sheets, which can be lay across the bed and work by while you sleep. You simply plug these sheets in, there is no need to turn them on as they are not electrical, they simply use the earth from your homes electrical circuit.

Why should I try this?
Since a picture speaks a thousand words, take a look at these

The reproductions above represent darkfield microscope images of blood taken from three individuals in attendance at Dr. Sinatra house just before and after forty minutes of grounding. The before image is on the left side, the after on the right. The pictures clearly show a dramatic thinning and decoupling of blood cells (which prevents dangerous clots, reduces the heart’s workload, and ensures healthy tissue oxygenation).
Below is: Photographic images documenting accelerated improvement of an 8-month-old, non-healing open wound suffered by an 84-year-old diabetic woman. (B) Taken after one week of grounding or earthing treatments,(C) Taken after 2 weeks of earthing treatment. Treatment consisted of a daily 30-minute grounding session with an electrode patch while patient was seated comfortably.

Is this Real?
Yes, Dr’s, athletes and even celebrities are using earthing to beat inflammation, jet lag and for general wellness. Gwyneth Paltrow has been vocally supportive of earthing. The Tour de France riders have attributed success to earthing as it speeds up recovery time, click here to watch the short 2 min YouTube video.
This is not new technology, this is ancient natural healing. Even the modern understanding of it is not new, Clint Ober, sometimes dubbed the father of earthing technology began his study of the topic in 1998 and I highly recommend his book “Earthing“, which is also available on audio book.

There are also several articles in medical journals including ‘national library of medicine’ article in March 2015, which concludes:
The emergence of a simple, natural, and accessible health strategy against chronic inflammation, warranting the serious attention of clinicians and researchers. As this report explains, it is a system requiring occasional recharging by conductive contact with the Earth’s surface – the “battery” for all planetary life – to be optimally effective.
