In my previous blogs, I spoke about how the body stores emotional stress and how this can eventually lead to physical discomfort or “dis-ease.” The good news is that there are gentle, natural ways to support emotional release before stress becomes deeply embedded in the body.

Alongside Reiki, practices such as meditation, breathwork and sound healing can play a powerful role in restoring balance.

Meditation – Creating Space for Emotional Processing

Meditation gives the nervous system permission to slow down.

When we sit in stillness, even for a few minutes, we shift from “fight or flight” into a calmer parasympathetic state. This allows emotions that may have been pushed aside to surface safely and gradually.

Regular meditation can:

  • Reduce anxiety and overthinking
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Lower stress hormones
  • Support better sleep
  • Increase self-awareness

When we become more aware of our emotions, we are less likely to suppress them — which means the body doesn’t need to store them.


Breathwork – Resetting the Nervous System

The breath is one of the quickest ways to influence how we feel physically and emotionally.

When we are stressed, breathing becomes shallow and rapid. This signals danger to the body. Conscious, slow breathing sends the opposite message — that we are safe.

Breathwork can:

  • Release stored tension
  • Calm the mind
  • Reduce physical tightness in the chest and stomach
  • Improve oxygen flow
  • Lower heart rate and blood pressure

Even five minutes of slow, intentional breathing can help discharge built-up emotional stress from the body.


Sound Healing – Clearing Energetic Blockages

Sound healing works on a vibrational level. Because our bodies are made largely of water and energy, sound frequencies can help shift stagnant energy and emotional blockages.

Using instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, or tuning forks, sound therapy can:

  • Deeply relax the body
  • Support emotional release
  • Balance the energy centres (chakras)
  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Promote mental clarity
