The Power of Breathwork: Simple Techniques to Release Stress and Restore Balance

We breathe every moment of every day — yet most of us rarely pay attention to how we breathe.

When we are stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, our breathing becomes shallow and rapid. This keeps the nervous system in a heightened state of alert. Over time, this pattern reinforces emotional tension in the body.

The breath is one of the most powerful tools we have to influence our emotional and physical wellbeing. It is the bridge between the mind and the body.

By consciously changing the way we breathe, we can calm the nervous system, release stored tension, and create a sense of safety within.

At Tamworth Reiki, I often encourage clients to explore gentle breathwork practices alongside energy healing to support emotional release.

Below are some simple techniques you can safely try at home.

1. Calm Breathing (4–4 Breathing)

This is a simple technique to quickly reduce stress and anxiety.

How to practice:

  1. Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor.
  2. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
  3. Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 4.
  4. Repeat for 2–5 minutes.

Benefits:

  • Slows heart rate
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Calms racing thoughts
  • Signals safety to the nervous system

This is ideal before bed, before a difficult conversation, or during moments of overwhelm.

2. Extended Exhale Breathing

Lengthening the exhale helps activate the parasympathetic (rest and restore) response.

How to practice:

  1. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4.
  2. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6 or 8.
  3. Continue for several minutes.

Benefits:

  • Releases physical tension
  • Reduces stress hormones
  • Supports emotional regulation
  • Encourages deeper relaxation

The longer exhale tells your body that the “threat” has passed.

3. Hand-on-Heart Breathing

This technique supports emotional grounding and self-soothing.

How to practice:

  1. Place one hand on your chest and one on your stomach.
  2. Breathe slowly into the belly, allowing it to gently rise.
  3. Imagine breathing calm into your heart space.
  4. Stay here for 3–5 minutes.

Benefits:

  • Reduces feelings of sadness or overwhelm
  • Encourages emotional safety
  • Connects you to your body

This is especially helpful during grief, stress, or emotional processing.

4. Box Breathing

Often used to manage high stress situations.

How to practice:

  1. Inhale for 4.
  2. Hold for 4.
  3. Exhale for 4.
  4. Hold for 4.
  5. Repeat for a few minutes.

Benefits:

  • Improves focus
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Balances the nervous system
  • Grounds scattered thoughts

Why Breathwork Helps Release Stored Stress

When emotions are suppressed, the body often holds tension in the chest, stomach, jaw, and shoulders.

Shallow breathing reinforces this tension.

Deep, intentional breathing:

  • Improves oxygen flow
  • Releases muscle tightness
  • Lowers cortisol levels
  • Signals safety to the brain
  • Encourages emotional release

When the body feels safe, it begins to let go of what it has been holding.

Breathwork works beautifully alongside Reiki because both practices help regulate the nervous system and restore energetic flow.

Important Considerations & Disclaimers

While gentle breathwork is safe for most people, it is important to approach it mindfully.

Please note:

  • If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or uncomfortable, stop immediately and return to normal breathing.
  • Avoid intense or rapid breathing techniques without guidance from a trained professional.
  • If you have a history of severe anxiety, panic disorder, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular conditions, or trauma, consult a healthcare professional before beginning breathwork practices.
  • Breathwork is a supportive wellness practice and is not a replacement for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Always listen to your body. Healing should feel supportive — not forced.
